Hey Harmony: Holiday Blues

Hey Harmony,

The holidays are rough for me. While everybody is celebrating and delighting in the winter spirit, I’m missing my mom, who died two years ago. Seeing everyone getting to spend quality time with their families makes me feel jealous, lonely, and overall miserable. I wish I could be happy for them, but I’m not. Does that make me a bad person? I just wish I could skip over the whole holiday season! How will I make it through?

Blue for Christmas

First of all, no, you’re not a bad person! Are you kidding me? You’re a good and beautiful person going through something really hard. You’re stronger than you know, and you will get through this. Here’s how:

  1. Open up to people you love and who love you. Share your favorite memories with other people who knew your mom. This will help you feel safe and connected.

  2. Create new holiday traditions that honor your mom’s memory. Light a candle with her name on it, create an alter, anything that makes you feel close to her. She can be a part of your life during the holidays more than ever!

  3. Don’t waste any time hanging around people who can’t be sympathetic to your sadness!

  4. Remember that even though it seems like everyone is loving the holidays, tons of people actually hate them, so you may not be as alone as you feel!

  5. Reach out to other people who have lost a loved one, it may feel good to be a comfort to somebody else.

Last but not least, remember that all of this is temporary. I’ll be thinking of you during this rocky time!

So many hugs,
