Hey Harmony: I Don't Want to Go Back to School
School starts tomorrow, and I do not want to go back. My winter break has been so perfect and free of stress, and I can’t even imagine walking into the doors of homeroom in just 24 hours. It’s leaving me already exhausted and with a knot in my stomach.
I’ve spent this break taking care of myself, from spending time with friends, to focusing on my hobbies, to binge-watching everything Netflix has to offer. I’m so sad when I think about giving all my time back to homework and activities I barely care about. Ugh, can I just stay home forever?!
Please help me get some perspective on going back to school! I know it’s not all bad, but I can’t seem to look on the bright side right now. Help me!
Winter Break Dropout
I feel ya, girl. After 2 weeks of straight relaxation, who wouldn’t want to stay home in cozy, homework-free paradise forever?! I certainly am not looking forward to trading in my pajamas for my math textbook, or Netflix for pop quizzes. But school doesn’t have to be so terrible! I promise you I can help make the back-to-school transition just a little smoother, because you need a boost of optimism if you’re going to survive tomorrow.
Here’s what you can do today: Set some goals. Whether you’re trying to cut back on homework time, speak up in class, make a new friend, or join a new extracurricular, a new year is a great time to get yourself on the right path. Who says you can’t achieve all your goals in 2019?! Feeling hopeful will perk up your mood and get you excited and on the right track. Get out some gel pens and a neon notebook and get planning. You’ve got your whole life ahead of you, so do something amazing with it!
Finally, don’t be afraid to keep your winter break mentality going. Relaxation and enthusiasm aren’t just for the holiday season. It seems like your school experience would be tiring for anyone. Even when you’re busy, it’s okay to take some time for self-care. Do a face mask, hang with your BFF, go to sleep early, or give yourself a Netflix night, especially during tests and other high-stress times. Tell yourself it’s okay to take a night off every so often. Trade in some of those boring activities for ones you actually love, even if they don’t look perfect on your transcript. No report card is worth sacrificing your happiness!
You can do this, girl! Put your shoulders back, hold your head up high, and fake it ‘til you make it. I’ll be right there with you - in spirit, of course. I’ve got my own back-to-school to handle!
