Addison Riecke: Cathy's Diary
The only problem with leaving the past behind is that sometimes it catches up with you.
Today started with a dream. Not a bad dream, exactly, just a confusing one. There I was, wandering through a deserted field, as a faraway voice called out my name. Cathy, Cathy… It sounded like a small child, someone who needed help. Maybe Ray? I thought Ray was gone, but then again, I had thought Henry was gone, too…
Things are shaking up here. Not just in my household, but all throughout Attaway. We have a new school principal, and new students from Millwood. We are all still waiting to see if Lenny Alvarez will be okay. Adding to that, I am still reeling from all the drama of Phoenix Fest, and Jo is, too.
Despite everything that has happened this year, Jo and I are trying to be normal kids. We have a new semester of classes, and school lunches spent together with Allen. Junior and I are going steady, and spending time with him gives me something to look forward to at the end of every day. Particularly now, because I don’t look forward to going home. Certainly not to my secretive parents, who keep encouraging me to go back to that awful Lawrence.
Is it so hard to leave the past behind? I wanted to do it after Phoenix Fest, but I have a feeling it will not be as easy as I thought. If only life was neat, and made sense.
Though, I suppose without the messiness of life, I would not have met Jo. Or Junior. Maybe I would never have opened the door to see Henry tonight.
For that, I count myself lucky.
