Nellie's Diary: Who is Heather Masterson?

So, I survived Crown Lake. Or, at least I thought I did.

My mom once told me that the good things in life aren’t supposed to be easy. They’re supposed to take hard work, disappointment, and struggle—walking not along the paved path, but the rocky one. She taught me to never take the lazy way out, and I’m trying to honor her. But, diary, just let me complain for a second. Why does everything have to feel so tough?! Why is Crown Lake Academy so hard to understand?!

Believe me, I know I’m not the only person with hardships in life. If there’s anything I’ve learned here at Crown Lake, it’s that nothing is as it seems. I thought Tiffany’s life was perfect, and behind the scenes she’s struggling to hold it all together. Meanwhile, I thought Chloe was someone I could trust no matter what, and she was working behind my back the entire time. I remember back when I was a little kid—when friends were friends, enemies were enemies, and Mom was there to guide me through it all. Now, I look at who I’ve become—who I’m becoming—and wonder if it was all worth it…

Crown Lake Academy is like a maze, full of twists and turns and something out to get you at every corner. It feels like once everything is figured out, the rug is pulled out from under me again and I’m left back where I started: Confused and alone. I’m still trying to recover from the shock of finding out that Chloe—that everyone—was Heather. And now I’m Heather. I mean, I think I’m Heather? After what happened in class today, I don’t even know what’s real anymore...

Diary, I’m only telling you this because I can’t tell anyone else. Not Chloe or Tiffany or Erin or Becca. Especially not Ryan, with his nosy, mystery-solving abilities. I just made it into the in crowd, and I can’t risk anyone thinking I’m crazy. But Heather wrote in my textbook. I mean the real Heather, not the Chloe-Tiffany-Nellie Heather. She wrote a note. To me

Like I said, Crown Lake is a mystery. And I have a feeling that the real story is only just beginning...
